Wednesday's Sketchbook: How to Colour in a Sofa

This term in rendering class, I've learned that colouring for interior design entails a lot more than staying in the lines. It's a whole layered, time consuming, and surprisingly difficult process!
Today I'm going to walk you through the steps to turn this:
 Into this:
If you would like to follow along and give it a try, I got the outline image of the sofa here.
Step One: Using a dark brown pencil crayon, give the top of the back cushions a slight indent, and soften the outline of the corners.
Step Two: Using the Prismacolor Marker 'French Grey 10", fill in each section of the sofa with a uniform wash of color.
Step 3: Use French Grey 30 to create thick rounded outlines on each of the couch cushions, keeping in mind the direction of your light source (mine is from the right of the image).
Step Four: Use French Greys 50 and 70 in the very edges and darkest point of shadow.
Step Five: Go over the entire couch with a uniform wash using a tan marker. I used Prismacolor's 'Sand'. Repeat the application, pressing harder on the edges and areas of shadow.
Step Six: Use a dark brown pencil crayon to emphasize soft shadows.
Step Seven: Use a blade to shave a small amount of dark brown pastel in your areas of shadow, and then use a tissue to blend it, this will soften your pencil crayon lines.
Step Eght: Repeat the pastel shaving technique with white in the centers of your couch cushions, to create areas of light reflection. Blend with a tissue.
Step Nine: Use a white gel pen to create sharper areas of reflection on edges of the sofa that would catch the light.
And Voila! You've got a beautifully colored sofa!
I hope you enjoyed this little tutorial! Let me know if you'd be interested in learning how to color other things, like drapery, hardwood, etc! :)

Wednesday's Sketchbook: Foo Dog (in Progress)

Obviously I'm still mourning the loss of the pair of foo dogs that I left behind.
But, rather than pout in bed I'm using it as inspiration for a little art this week!
He's taking longer than I anticipated because of all the intricate detailing.
Can't believe it's Wednesday already!

Wednesday's Art (that I'm covetting)

Alright guys, I haven't created any doodles in a couple of weeks, and that makes me a bad blogger. Or maybe just a busy one. But I couldn't leave you high and dry today, so I'm sharing some really cool art that I'm seriously considering purchasing for my new place.

Y'all better recognize this girl is on a strict budget, so these are all cost friendly prints. Lovely.

1. Ink Blot art by Jessica of The Aestate
'Ingenue' via The Aestate
'Papillon' via The Aestate
Ahh too beautiful! I only need one, but which one? What's your vote guys?  Helppp!
On a side note, psych was one of only 2 B's I got throughout my University degree (still holding a grudge against it) so I'm surprised I'm drawn to these pyschology inspired prints..Actually look at them, I'm not surprised at all

2. Gold Perfume art by I See Noise
Chanel No.5 via I See Noise
Coco Chanel via I see Noise
You caught me, I posted about these prints before in my Birthday Wishlist in June. But, I'm still wishin away y'all! They are the perfect pair. I want both.

Speaking of Art, Charmaine received her original Dining Room painting in the mail and has it hung up and framed:
 via My Best Friend Craig
Seeing my work framed and hanging in someone's space fills me with so much pride!
I have another specially commissioned doodle to reveal soon!
If you have something you'd like doodled up, don't be shy ;).

Lastly, with all eyes on the London for the Olympics and my blogging friend Ashleigh helping out at Olympic Park, I did a guest post over on her blog all about adding some London swag to your decor! Check it out.

Thanks for stopping by :) xo

Wednesday's Doodle: Tufted Pink Chair

As I mentioned last week, I got myself a set of watercolour paints and have been experimenting with them! For you today, I've painted up this darling pink tufted chair. The variation in tones is much more distinct in person, but it wouldn't show up for me on the computer. Probably because I photographed this with artificial light...bad blogger. Either way, I like the result and am loving the watercolours! I'm used to painting with oils, and these really are so much easier to work with (they dry so quick!) and to clean!

I don't usually say this but...I can't believe it's only Wednesday. Does this week feel extra long to anyone else?

Wednesday's Doodle #5

Since spotting this chair via Design Darling and her feature in Adore Home Magazine I've been busy imagining what kind of a cooky (yet fabulous) room could host such a strong statement piece.  It's the Katie Maennle Birdcage Chair.
Would you be brave enough to put one (or a pair!) or these in your house?! I think they're so fun!
Hope your week is going well...just think, it's almost Friday!

Wednesday's Doodles # 3

I love simple glass pendants, colorful dishes, pops of red, and an eclectic mix of chairs. This little breakfast nook embodies all of those things.
